Interesting events of summer 2016 in St. Petersburg
May 26 – July 24, XXIV Music Festival “Stars of the White Nights”
The festival is among the ten largest and popular musical events in the world. Three scenes of Mariinsky Theatre will host more than 160 concerts and performances with world-famous stars. More than 20 well-known instrumentalists and 10 musical teams are invited to participate in the event. Art Director – Valery Gergiev.
May 30 – September 16, Celebration of 250th anniversary of the Gatchina Palace
The brightest moments of the anniversary events: reconstruction of the historic change of guards of Gatchina Imperial Guards of Jager regiment at the Palace Platz every weekend of the summer, exhibition “Imperial owners of Gatchina”, brass instruments festival “Gatchina international Alexander brass-parade”. June 3 – 5, staging of the ”Holopka” operetta by N.M. Strelnikov in the open air at Jordanian facade on June 18.
June 3 – 5, ”Street theatre festival” at Elagin Park
More than 30 street theaters from Russia, Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, Belarus, Slovakia, Belgium will perform at the largest amusement park of St. Petersburg at the Elagin island. 11 venues of the park will simultaneously hold funny performances and invite audience to participate during 3 days.
June 4 – 19, “Musical BRODSKY DRIVE” festival
On weekends the old garden of Anna Akhmatova Museum will host jazz concerts of St. Petersburg musicians. The concerts starts at 19:00.
June 7 – 10, I International festival of arts “Elena”
The festival will consist of performances of the best students of the International Academy of Music of Elena Obraztsova together with their tutors. The concerts will take place at the Philharmonia, Capella and at the Music-hall. The event will be closed by a gala concert with the participation of world stars in the Big hall of the Philharmonic.
June 11 – 13 The Third annual St. Petersburg food festival “National kitchen is the key to the friendship between nationalities”
The event is held at the Peter and Paul Fortress of St. Petersburg where national cuisine restaurants will introduce guests with the culinary traditions of their regions. The program includes: degustation, competitions, performances, gifts, workshops.
June 11 – 13 “Medieval tale” festival
Knight competitions and horse tournaments, fortress storming and fireworks are announced in the program of the festival in the ancient town of Vyborg located at the Leningradskaya area. You can get to Vyborg by train from the Finlandskaya railway station (metro Ploschad Lenina).
June 10 – 19 Annual contest-festival “The Imperial Gardens of Russia” is held in the Mikhailovsky garden of the Russian Museum. Participants will create artistic landscape compositions and play areas in the theme “Flowers of life”, the winners of the exhibition-competition of landscape design will be chosen by the jury and visitors of the park. At the same time entertainment programs will be organized in the park.
July 12 – Russia Day
A citywide celebration is scheduled on the Strelka of Vasilyevsky island. A concert and children’s entertainment program will be held close to the Rostral columns. Sreet celebrations will be organised by all districts of the city.
June 16 – 19, “St. Petersburg holidays” festival
The event will take place at the Palace Square as a part of St. Petersburg cultural forum. The program includes: marathon of Soviet and Russian movies, a concert of Mariinsky orchestra directed by Valery Gergiev and a concert of music from movies composed by Eduard Artemyev. Admission is free.

Festival “The Palaces of St. Petersburg” is a series of classical music concerts held in the halls of the palaces of St. Petersburg: Catherine, Marble, Menshikov, Sheremetyev, Constantine Palace and Mihailovsky castle. Performed by the best soloists and musical groups of Russia.
The night of 25-26 of June a Holiday of Russian graduates “Scarlet sails”
One of the most exciting and biggest event of St. Petersburg. Established in 1968 to honour high school graduates, The Scarlet Sales has turned into a city-wide gathering of up to 3 million viewers. Venues: Palace square (only for graduates), Strelka of Vasilevsky island, embankments, bridges and the Neva river. The most spectacular part is a unique theatrical and musical light show featuring the passage of a sailboat with scarlet sails, accompanied by a flotilla of smaller ships on the Neva River.
June 25 Rock festival “Open your windows”
The most famous Russian rock-musicians will held a festival on the former stadium of the Electromechanical plant.
GEEK PICNIC on June 25 and 26
The largest event of technology, science and art, held in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Jerusalem. The St. Petersburg part will be held in the park of the Elagin island. The festival covers everything new and interesting. The program is prepared in gaming and entertainment modes: various shows, robots, psychics, experiments, workshops, art performances and music.
July 1 – 3 “Petrojazz” festival
International music jazz festival will bring together jazz stars from Russia, USA, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Italy and Baltic countries. The open stage at Ostrovsky square will host musical performances, dance shows and master classes (metro Gostiny Dvor).
July 2, 3 “STEREOLETO” festival
Fifteenth international music festival on Elagin island will become a cheerful open air holiday featuring performances by more than 40 musicians from 15 countries. In addition to the music performances the festival organises: restaurant area, art spot, design-market, spaces for families and children, and also the “Israeli beach” with its music and entertainment program.
July 2 – 3 “Alexandria’s carousel. The Golden Age” festival
Medieval feast with balls, theatrical performances, horses tournaments, archery and a fair awaits guests at the “Alexandria” Park of Peterhof Museum-reserve.
July 9 Urban Culture Fest
A celebration of urban culture in the Museum of street art, located on the grounds of the former plant. Events: music scenes, beauty salons, tattoo spots, fair, street ball and skateboards competitions. At the same time there will be held a custom culture festival White Night Kustom Awards, representing the functioning of workshops, clubs and studios producing and revising classic vehicles, exclusive motorcycles and bicycles.
July 9 – 10 “Night of music in Gatchina”
Bright annual gala-concert of symphonic music on the stage placed in the middle of the White lake in front of Gatchina Palace at the “Gatchina” museum-reserve. Held for the sixth time and gathers up to 15,000 spectators.
July 12 – 23 V International St. Petersburg Festival “Opera for Everyone!”
Masterpieces of Opera classics performed by famous musicians will be heard in open areas at the historic sights of St. Petersburg. Free admission. The opening will take place on July 12 at the Cathedral square of the Peter and Paul fortress by performance of “Boris Godunov” opera by Aexander Borodin. The following concerts: July 16 – in front of the Palace of Gatchina, July 19 – in front of the Elagin Palace at the Elagin island, July 23 – at the main parade platz at Tsarskoye Selo.
July 16, 17 “Vkontakte” festival
The festival will be held for the second time at the beach of 300th anniversary park in St. Petersburg. The event is organized by social network “Vkontakte” and gathers diverse groups of visitors. Seventeen different areas of the venue will be dedicated to music, food, innovation, games, sports, extreme, cosplay, humor, art, fashion, children’s village and others. It is expected to geather up to 100,000 people.
July 30, 31 The “Night of Light” in the Gatchina Museum Reserve
Magical light and fireworks shows, theater performances in a beautiful historic Palace and Park complex.
July 30,31 Medieval festival in Vyborg (Leningradskaya oblast’)
Military-historical festival “Knight’s castle. Reconstruction of the middle Ages” will take viewers to a medieval castle with feasts, knight tournaments and sounds of ancient music. Special evening program offers costume contests, dancing, the speech of sorcerer from Florence and fire performance.
July 30, Usadba Jazz Festival
The largest international jazz festival in Russia held in the open air, during the summer it takes place in several cities of Russia. In Saint-Petersburg it is held at the Maslyany meadow of Elagin island and it gathers a huge and diverse audience. The program consists of live jazz performances, design market, food zone, sports and children areas.
July 31, Russian Navy Day
The Navy day is one of the most important holidays of St. Petersburg, because the history of the city has always been tied to the sea. The celebration takes place on the last weekend of July and includes ships parade, admissions for visiting warships, street festivals in the city center, concerts and water sports competitions.
August 5, Music festival “Dobrolet”
Open air concerts at the Peter and Paul fortress are dedicated to the 20th anniversary of “Dobrolet” recording studio. The best Russian bands will congratulate the studio with which they work: AQUARIUM, SPLEEN, TEQUILAJAZZZ, MARKSCHEIDER KUNST, JUPITER, POLES. After a five-hour musical marathon will start an entertainment program for adults and children.
August 5 – 10, Choral festival “Singing world”
Bands from different countries and singers of all ages take part in the event. Performances will be held at the central concert venues, museums and temples of the city including the Kazansky Cathedral and Ethnographic Museum.
August 22 – the Day of the national flag of the Russian Federation
Interactive sites will be created on Nevsky prospect, a moto and auto rally “Forward, Russia!” will be held through the main streets of the city along with various concerts.
August 28, the birthday of Central Park of Culture and Recreation named after S. Kirov
Music and poetry festival “Literature. Music. The Park” dedicated to the birthday of Central Park of Culture and Recreation named after S. Kirov will be held in August. Symphonic and contemporary music, literature readings, performances and lots of fun for the whole family gives the citizens a wonderful holiday in the last weekend of Summer.
