This intact oasis in the historical center of St. Petersburg is considered to be one of the oldest gardens in Russia. It counts more than 80.000 species of plants. Botanical garden was laid as an herb garden where the medicinal plants for the local pharmacies were grown. During the reign of Peter I and Catherine II the garden expanded fast offering a public ground for speeches and debates among the famous botanists. Under Alexander I the garden was given the name Imperial Botanical Garden. Nicholas I then increased the financing needed to achieve certain scientific goals and in the second middle of the 19th century the collection grew noticeably as a result of the Russian expedition to distant lands.
Today, the spacious greenhouses cover an area of 1 hectare stretching over a 1000 meters. The museum has 5 collections: scatological, dendrological, anatomical, the collections of fossil plants and applied botany. The Garden Sections include herbarium collections: garden, Russian, regional and Japanese. Lastly, the biggest and unique herb collections are on display at the most famous botanists and explorers section; Fisher, Stephan, Schumacher and Ledebyr among others.
