Stereoleto 2017 Festival

It’s a music festival where both foreign and Russian bands perform. A special program called Symphonic Cinema is dedicated to Victor Tsoi in honor of his 55th anniversary in 2017. Musicians of different genres: electronic, rappers, indie and experimenters, mixing styles, perform at several venues. Special guests are the Finns Jaakko Eino Kalevi and K-X-P, as well as the Danes of Sekuola band.

Sand Sculpture 2017 Festival

It’s an annual festival in which srtists from all over Russia create sand sculptures. The theme of this year is Great Russia. You will see historical subjects from the past of the country, illustrations to the most significant events, sculptures of great people who have changed the destiny of the state. Also you can admire the sand model of Aurora cruiser and the nine-meter Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed.

OPEN LOOK XIX International Festival of Contemporary Dance

Troupes from France, Hungary, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Spain, Israel, Holland, Russia and other countries perform at the festival. The artists use various genres of modern dance. They will talk about religion, faith, life and people using rhythm, dynamic movements, plasticity and expressiveness. Also they push away the boundaries of dance perception and break the established stereotypes.

Fontanka SUP-2017, festival

This festival is dedicated to sapsurfing sport. It’s a kind of surfing, where a person stands on a board and uses an oar for rowing. Anyone can participate in the festival as professional, or an amateur if you’re over 14 years. Also it will be possible to observe what’s happening from the embankment. Amateur participants will pass along the Kryukov Canal, the Fontanka, the Neva and the Lebyazhy Gulf. Professionals have separate special program. The festival is on the beach of the Peter and Paul Fortress on the second day. Registration is required.

Night of Music in Gatchina 2017, festival

Don’t miss a chance to visit a night of music! Several symphony orchestras perform compositions of different genres and styles at this festival. They play classics, including Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Ravel. Also musicians perform variety music and songs from famous films (Soviet and foreign).

Concerts and theatre highlights of the week

Concert of Marjorie Barnes and Jazz Classic Trio

American jazz star Marjorie Barnes performs on this concert. She sings songs from Ella Fitzgerald’s repertoire in honor of her jubilee in 2017. The musicians of Jazz Classic Trio orchestra join the singer on stage. The concert takes place in the framework of Roof Music Fest music event, held on the roofs of St. Petersburg.

Penzum, performance

Don’t miss an opportunity to visit a performance created by French choreographer Joseph Naj on music of composer Joel Leander. The plot is based on the journal of the Hungarian poet Jozsef Attila, who committed suicide. It’s a story about a tragic love. A special atmosphere is given by unusual costumes of artists, avant-garde music, using of face masks and emotional choreography. White sheets of paper are used on the stage instead of decorations. The characters draw on them.

Everything begins with love. Continuation …, performance

It’s an author’s solo performance acted by Maxim Averin. He is also the director of the production. You will hear excerpts from the works of Russian poets and prose writers, and parts of the songs of Vysotsky and Vertinsky. The plot tells you about the character, who learns to live here and now. He talks about love, happiness and the concept of life.

White Nights International Music Festival

It’s an annual concert, where young musicians from around the world perform. Representatives of different genres and styles sing on the stage. The main goal of this festival is uniting the talented people from different parts of the world who decided to devote their lives to music. The concert is held at the most beautiful time of the year in St. Petersburg – during the white nights.

F63.9, ballet

It’s a ballet of choreographer Alexei Kononov on the music of Alfred Schnittke. The play is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the Russian poetess Marina Tsvetaeva and is based on her drama Phaedra. F63.9 is the name of the love disease, which was officially registered by WHO. The choreographer studies a mysterious feeling that can absorb and destroy a person, make him the happiest, teach him how to be close to other people and overcome contradictions and duality of feelings. Two artists of the Mariinsky Theater perform the roles of the ballet.

Exhibition highlights of the week

Exhibition of Georgy Shishkin

It’s an exhibition of the Russian artist Georgy Shishkin. The peak of his fame came in the 1990s, when his works were exhibited in Paris, Cannes, and Monaco. He likes to draw on the themes of Russian ballet, depict historical subjects and portraits of famous actors and actors. The artist try to convey the sensuality and subtlety of the inner world. Now he lives and works in Monaco. The exhibition includes 50 of his works.

PORTE exhibition

This exhibition showcases the works of Petr Ldin and Inga Pavlova. They make paintings in abstract expressionism style. The authors show their story, how they became the artists, what kind of the world they see, and what attracts them in it. Petr and Inga try to capture the moments of time.

Intervention. Exhibition of Pavel Ignatyev

It’s an exhibition of the Russian sculptor, where everything is depicted in purple. It consists of the author’s messages to the modern man. The ordinary people are in the center of the artist’s attention. He depicts single people who think that it’s difficult to live in the world. The exhibition is a series of plastic variations illustrating the author’s reflections. You can see autobiography – some of the works are devoted to friends, relatives, and moments from the past. Ignatiev’s exhibition is a selfie of the modern world, showing a man of the XXI century. And you don’t want to be like him.

Balalaika. Russian Detective, exhibition

This exhibition is dedicated to the Russian balalaika. You can know more about the history of this musical instrument, see how it’s created, reveal its secrets. This exhibition includes about 50 kinds of balalaika: from the first folklore balalaika to the modern electric one. Also you can see «relatives» of the famous instrument: dutar and dombra. Moreover the exposition includes paintings, engravings associated with music themes. You will listen to folklore melodies while walk in exhibition halls.

Manolo Blanik. Shoes as art, exhibition

The exhibition includes about 30 drawings and 200 pairs of different shoes from the personal archive of Spanish designer Manolo Blanik. His works are elegance, splendid and have their own unchanging style. This exhibition explores the different directions of the designer’s work and it’s divided into six unofficial blocks, reflecting it.

Things to do with kids

Cinderella, ballet

It’s not a traditional ballet production. The choreographer Alexei Ratmansky directed this performance with minimal decorations. All attention is paid to dance. The play has changes in the plot: there are no fairies, the Seasons of the year gives the main character presents, and Cinderella learns dancing while watching the dancing lessons of her sisters. The only thing that remaines unchanged – the love of the girl and the prince, escaping from the castle and a beautiful reunion of lovers.

Moomin-troll and the wizard’s hat, performance

It’s a puppet show based on the fairytales of the Swedish writer Tove Jansson. You will know more about the adventures of lovely Moomin-Trolls and their friends. The performances of this theater are interactive, and the audience can participate in what’s happening on the stage. Moomin-troll and the wizard’s hat is also interactive performance. It’s intended for children 4–10 years old.

The exhibition of Mindo butterflies garden

Mindo is a world of tropical forests. Its exhibition includes different types of butterflies. The White Admiral, the largest Russian butterfly, Amazonian butterflies such as Owl Kaligo with snake ornament and ultramarine Blue Morpho and many more residents from the different places of the planet. Also turtles and lizards, newts and spurge frogs, Chilean squirrels and a long-eared Asian owl, guinea pigs and many other inhabitants from different continents live in the garden Mindo.

Fairytales of Ole Lukkoye, performance

Ole Lukoye is a character from Andersen’s fairytales, who gives obedient children good dreams. This puppet show is directed by Eduard Gaidai. The character Lukoye becomes a kind magician, telling good fairytales from Russian folklore in this stage production. Three actors play by the puppets on a chessboard. The performance lasts an hour and a half with one intermission.
