Festivals and city holidays

KUKART International Festival

It’s a puppet festival in St. Petersburg. Many collectives from all over the world come to the city. The main theme of this year event is making links between theaters of different countries. This year theaters form Balkan states are the majority. The festival is divided into the Main, Club and Special programs. Actors use a variety of dolls (from puppets to paper images) at performances for children and adults. KUKART is held at several venues in St. Petersburg.

Dostoevsky’s Day 2017

It’s a festival in memory of the great Russian writer. Museums, theaters, and libraries have different program related to him and his works. You will be able to communicate with the characters of his novels, learn their stories through stage productions and take a part in a theatrical carnival. The festival begins at the Dostoevsky Museum.

Russian fortress military-historical festival

It’s a festival dedicated to the Middle Age time periods. Historical reenactors recreate the atmosphere of antiquity, organize mass battles with real archers and riders. You can try the camp food cooked according to the recipes of medieval soldiers, see how they used to dress, dance at beautiful music and buy souvenirs.

Youth Day in St. Petersburg

Don’t miss a chance to visit a festival in honor of the Day of Youth on the Moskovskaya Square. You can participate in streetball and e-sports competitions, skate, dance, and play table football or watch how others do it. In addition, the festival has special food courts with different menus, and the famous DJs of St. Petersburg  perform on stage.

Concerts and theatre highlights of the week

Mother Courage and Her Children, performance

This performance is based on the same name of Bertolt Brecht. The director is Greek Theodoros Terzopoulos. The plot tells you about the life of people in the XVII century during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). It’s a story about the life’s lessons that sometimes a person isn’t able to learn correctly.

Inspector, performance

This performance is considered one of the best productions of St. Petersburg Lensoviet Theater. It was created on the basis of the same name play of Gogol. However, director Sergei Fedotov moved the action into the XIX century, the characters dressed in appropriate clothes, and the whole atmosphere reflects the trends of that time. The plot and actors’ lines are very clear. It’s a comedy about people stupidity.

Concert of Metronomy

The British indie band comes to St. Petersburg to present the new album named Summer 08. The musicians have gained worldwide popularity thanks to melodic and very touching songs. Nevertheless, their music is very rhythmic and energetic.

Governor, performance

It’s a new work of Andrei Moguchy. The basis of this performance is the narrative work of Leonid Andreev. This is the first first premiere of 2017, marked by a very controversial jubilee, the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution. Andreev’s text became a response to the murder of the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Aleksandrovich, committed by the Socialist-Revolutionist Kalyaev. The writer-symbolist focuses not on the crime, but on the confrontation of the individual and formal debt.

Concert of Aquarium music band

Aquarium, one of the most famous Russian rock band performs in St. Petersburg. Its concert is timed to the 45th anniversary of the collective. Honesty, inflexibility and sincerity are the main features of their music. The musicians sing their famous hits that haven’t lost their relevance to this day.

It happened with me, performance

It’s an experimental performance of the director Alexander Artyomov. The plot tells you about the life of Gabriela D’Annunzio, a litterateur, a poet, an adventurer and a mystic of the XIX century. Every day he had a new romance with a girl. You will hear six lovers’ stories which will tell you different versions of what their love was with this Don Juan. It’s very difficult to understand which story is truthful, and what is the desired fiction, and not reality.

Exhibition highlights of the week

Exhibition of Leonid Krivitsky

This exhibition shows the monumental works of Leonid Krivitsky. Portraits, landscapes, graphics, sculptures, and paintings on the theme of the Siege of Leningrad and the Soviet period of history. Also you can see the author’s triptych dedicated to the Holocaust – it’s his last work. The exhibition includes 50 works of Krivitsky.

Born by the wind of Apsheron. Azerbaijani artists of the 1960s–1980s, exhibition

This exhibition explores the works of classics of the Azerbaijani painting of the XX century. It showcases artworks of artists who were rebels and innovators and influenced on modern art of Azerbaijan. Most of the paintings are dedicated to the beauty of the Apsheron peninsula. It’s a symbol of their motherland and an endless source of inspiration for artists. The exposition includes more than 40 paintings and sculptures from the collections of the largest museums in Azerbaijan.

Quiet Joys, exhibition

It’s an exhibition of Anastasia Evgrafova from Ossetia. The artist depicts the things in such way creating a special biography to them. The worlds are on the verge of real and fictional on her paintings, but they are invariably full of light and harmony. Anastasia experiments with genres, shifts the classical boundaries of painting. Her art is based on the artist’s worldview.

The art of Great Novgorod in the era of Saint Macarius, exhibition

This exhibition showcases icons, utensils for worship services, and other memorable items created in Novgorod in the 16th century during the reign of Macarius. It’s believed that it was Macarius who laid the foundation for the further development of Novgorod art. You can also see photos depicted how the restoration work and excavations were carried out.

Anselm Kiefer – to Velimir Khlebnikov, exhibition

It’s an exhibition of the German artist Anselm Kiefer. His paintings are full of philosophy, religion themes, connected with the literary and historical heritage of mankind. The world culture inspires the artist. He uses not only paint but also land, metal, sear flowers and straw. The exhibition includes 20 paintings, which are dedicated to the Russian avant-garde artist Khlebnikov.

Message, performance

It’s an unusual theatrical production of the modern theater CONTRAST. It uses different scenic genres and ways of thought expression. It’s a kind of visual theater where there is no clear plot. Everything is built on contrast and around bright images. The performance combines acrobatic elements, juggling, balancing and modern choreography. Message is a story about a fantastic world where it seems that everything that happens is a figment of the imagination.

Love for Three Oranges, opera

It’s a small performance for young audience on the music of Carlo Gozzi, Vsevolod Meyerhold and Sergei Prokofiev. The plot tells you about the unhappy Prince and his companion who go in search of wonderful oranges. Hidden real princesses are inside these fruits. It’s a fairytale of love and magic.

At the Ark at 8, performance

It’s a performance of director Ekaterina Gorokhovskaya. The plot tells you about three brave penguins who want to get on the saving Noah’s Ark. But only pairs can get in it. And that’s a problem. Therefore, the characters come up with a cunning plan to get all three. This performance emphasizes such eternal concepts as friendship, faith, mutual assistance and help to one’s neighbor.

Hedgehog met bear …, performance

This musical performance based on the fairytales of Sergey Kozlov is directed by Ekaterina Soboleva. It explores the surroundings and offers to see the miracles. This performance tells about friendship and what does it really mean. The Hedgehog and Bear lost themselves in midnight and tries to find each other. It’s intended for children 4-10 years.
