Festivals and city holidays

Operetta-Park Festival

This festival is held in one of the most picturesque places of the Leningrad region – Gatchina. You can see circus performances and theatrical staging. Also dancers and stuntmen participate in this festival. You can listen to the operettas like Wedding in Malinovka and Mr. X, as well as solo performances of opera singers. The beginning is at 20.

RocknMob music flash mob

100 musicians perform solo or with group in Piterland Shopping center at this festival. Guitarists, drummers, keyboardists and vocalists participate in it. This big orchestra plays the most famous rock music hits. Everyone can take a part in this festival.

Cinema nights at Lumiere Hall

Don’t miss a chance to see film screening at night in June. You will watch the best sci-fi movies, classics, films about criminals and mafia, and even Japanese anime of Hayao Miyazaki. The main special feature of the place where cinema nights are held is that the viewer is completely immersed in the film. Lumiere Hall has large screens located on the walls and columns in the hall. Film screening is on the weekends.

La bohème opera

It’s an opera of the British director Ian Judge on the music of Giacomo Puccini. The plot tells you about the life of French bohemia in Paris in the 1930s. It’s about life, simple human emotions, hardships and happy moments. The main characters learn to accept each other with weaknesses and merits, to love and forgive. It’s a first joint work of the British director and the Mariinsky Theater.

Last year in Marienbad, performance

This performance is based on the same name film of Alain Rene. It’s an avant-garde staging of the Russian director Dmitry Volkostrelov. The plot tells you about the characters who are stuck between several realities. They try to understand where they are, study their past and possible future, and try to remember what happened in Marienbad. It’s an attempt to transfer the film to the stage of the theater.

Concert of The Piano Guys

Famous American band of musicians The Piano Guys perform in St. Petersburg for the first time. They play the cello and piano covers of songs from films, classical compositions and even jazz melodies. Also the band presents its new album.

The Flying Ship musical

It’s a musical performance based on the same name Soviet cartoon. This plot tells the story of kindness, pure love and frankness that always overcome the evil and cunning. Familiar songs from the cartoon, and new compositions created for this performance are sounded there. Beautiful scenography and splendid costumes make this musical much more special.

Cabaret Brecht performance

It’s a performance of Yuri Butusov based on the texts of Berthold Brecht. It’s a combination of elements of cabaret and modern theater. Actors speak their cues in German, English, French and Russian. It’s a biographical performance. The plot tells you about Brecht’s difficult search for his place in the world and the source of inspiration.

Exhibition highlights of the week

Vasily Vereshchagin. To the 175th anniversary of his birth, exhibition

This exhibition showcases 220 paintings created by the master of battle painting and an ethnographic artist. Vereshchagin was a traveler who visited the Russian North, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Central Asia, Japan, Palestine, and India. His paintings reflect not only life in these places, but also the artist’s own impressions. The exhibition includes paintings from the collections of the main national Russian museums.

Under clothes. History of design of underwear, exhibition

This exhibition is dedicated to the clothes hidden from the eyes of society. It includes about 150 items of women’s and men’s underwear, from the XVIII century until now, including the clothes of Hollywood stars. Also you will see how the wearing of different clothes influences to the body, and what kind of experiments with clothes are being carried out to look beautiful.

Salvador Dali. Surrealist and classic exhibition

An exhibition dedicated to the art of one of the most eccentric artists of the world, Salvador Dali, is in St. Petersburg for the first time. You will see his paintings and graphic works from the museums and private collections. His surrealistic paintings portray both real and inexplicable fantastic world. The exhibition includes 150 works of the artist.

How the book is born, exhibition

It’s an exhibition of Russian book illustrator Oleg Yakhnin. He likes to draw in a black and white palette, creating multi-figure compositions, and uses optical effects. His works are full of metaphors and references, forcing the viewer to think. The artist likes to experiment and work in different techniques.

Structures Exhibition

An exhibition dedicated to the concept of structure is on in the Marble Palace. This is a kind of discussion about formalism, trying to prove that “pure forms” will never lose their relevance in art. The exhibition features the models and matrices of different structures that have turned into stable plastic motifs (net, crystal, chain, etc.). It includes the works from the collection of the Russian Museum, the Novy (New) Museum (St. Petersburg), the Museum of Organic Culture (Kolomna) and private collections.

Things to do with kids

Firebird, ballet

This ballet is a reconstruction of the original version created by choreographer Mikhail Fokin on the music of Stravinsky. Decorations and costumes correspond to those which are used in the XIX century by Diaghilev during the Russian seasons abroad. The plot is based on Russian fairytales, where the character is looking for a beautiful Firebird that brightens the darkest corners on earth. The ballet lasts 50 minutes.

Bioexperimentanium exhibition

Bioexperimentanium is an interactive exhibition where children learn more about different biological processes and phenomena. They can touch, run, and try everything. This exhibition includes 60 training installations. Also group and individual excursions are held and young visitors can become real experimental scientists during them.

It’s an interactive musical performance for young spectators. The plot tells you about the characters who are searching for their favorite toys. They meet various interesting creatures on the way. You will see a lot of dances and funny jokes in the play.
