Interesting events of summer 2015 in St. Petersburg
Almost every weekend various celebrations and festivals are held in St. Petersburg during spring and summer. The biggest and most catchy events are listed below:
May 16 – The official annual ceremony of fountains opening will be held in The State Museum Reserve Peterhof. The launch of fountains traditionally gathers huge numbers of visitors. It is an enormous theatrical and light show with live concerts and fireworks. This year a 300th anniversary of the Grand Peterhof Palace will also be celebrated.
May 16 – Smelt Feast is conducted only in St. Petersburg and is dedicated to the season of smelt catching. Smelt, a favorite local delicacy, is a small silvery fish which appears in stores from the middle of May for a short period of time. The festival is held at the open area of Lenexpo Expoforum, it includes fun contests, smelt prepared in numerous ways and plenty of concerts. The event is very popular among the locals and attracts thousands of hungry spectators.
May 16 – The Night of Museums, an annual international event dedicated to International Museum Day (IMD), will be held on the evenings of May 16 & 17. St. Petersburg museums and libraries, as well as 2000 museums across the world, will open its doors each night to present special programs, one-day exhibitions, concerts and historical reconstructions.
May 27 – Celebration of St. Petersburg Foundation Day is a large-scale festival that takes place on the central streets and squares of the city. Because May 27 falls on a week-day, the amusements are usually postponed until the weekend. Open-air theater performances, music and light shows, and concerts are held. The event finishes with a late night grand fireworks display over the Neva River.
May 29-30 – “Elagin Park” Street Theatre Festival is held in one of the most beautiful parks of the city. Enjoy miraculous worlds of wonder and ideas through performances of well-known groups of street artists from Europe and Russia.
May 28-31 – The Baltic Sea Festival, a colorful water festival at the harbor close to Lenexpo Expoforum. The program includes a parade of boats and ships, water-show program, regatta and a comprehensive exhibition for water-recreation lovers.
The night of 20-21 of June – Alye Parusa (Scarlet Sails), a ball of all Russian graduates is held in the middle of “White Nights” season. You can enjoy the celebration from the Palace Square, the spit of Vasilyevsky Island or the central embankments of the Neva River. The festival includes a unique musical and theatrical light show featuring the passage of a sailboat with scarlet sails, accompanied by a flotilla of smaller ships on the Neva River. Plus there are concerts of Russian stars on the Palace square and Vasilyevsky Island. The first festival took place in Leningrad in 1969 and was produced by director of BDT (Big Drama Theater), George Tovstonogov.
May 27 – August 2 – XXIII Music Festival “Stars of the White Nights” at the Mariinsky Theater, the participants are internationally famous stars. The festival is among the ten largest musical events in the world.
June 5-14 – International Contest-Festival “The Imperial Gardens of Russia” held in the Mikhailovsky Garden of the Russian Museum. The theme of the festival in 2015 is “The Great Silk Way”. The event will feature garden projects and cultural programs about the traditions of the “Silk Way” countries.
June 12 – Russia Day, a young holiday, but with established urban traditions: a parade of military bands, numerous free themed city tours, concerts, military-sporting events.
June 14 – Russian festival of Holi Colors will be held at the stadium “Kirovets”. Thousands of people will gather on a huge grassy field to listen to joyful music and dance while pouring a few tons of paint on each other. This fun event is free. Special natural paints can be purchased at the festival.
June 12-23 – International St. Petersburg Festival “Opera for Everyone!” Open opera concerts performed by the leading artists of St. Petersburg on the central squares of the city.
June 18-20 – International Economic Forum, a business event that brings together presidents and governments of developing countries, the heads of major companies and leading experts in the field of economy.
June 27-28 – Eco Educational “Green Festival” at the park of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg. The festival will offer workshops, healthy living programs, exhibitions, healthy food, fashion shows, concerts, and fairs developing the idea of “nature respect”.
July 18-19 – Summer Festival “Vkontakte” in the park of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the meeting place of the real and virtual worlds. The park will be divided into “common interests” zones and real musicians will revive music recordings.
July 26 (the last Sunday in July) – the celebration of the Russian Navy Day is a very popular holiday, the celebration includes a parade, street festival, sporting events, concerts and admission for visiting warships.
July 25-26 is a time of gastronomic festival “Oda! Eda! in Central Park of Culture and Recreation on Elagin Island. Festival guests get acquainted with the intricacies of the St. Petersburg cuisine. At the festival guests evaluate the dishes of numerous restaurants, participate in competitions, and take part extensive entertainment programs.
The night of 2-3 August – The “Night of Light” in the Gatchina Museum Reserve, a big light, musical and theater performance in the park against the backdrop of structures of the ancient imperial gardens.
